Meet our Physicians
Holly Abernethy, MD
Dr. Abernethy was born in Harrisburg, Virginia. She earned an undergraduate degree in biology at Bridgewater College in 1997 where she graduated summa cum laude. She pursued her love of medicine at Ross University where she earned an MD. She did her internship at and residency at the Shenandoah Valley Family Practice program in Front Royal, Virginia. She joined Piñon Family Practice in 2010 where she has a lengthy list of devoted patients.
Dr. Abernethy is married to Manish Pandya, a nephrologist, who practices in Farmington, as well. Together they have two children, Ashby and Meade, with whom they enjoy spending time outdoors and enjoying the desert and mountains of the Southwest.
Ronald S. Bliss, MD
Dr. Bliss, a native of Farmington, New Mexico, graduated from Farmington HS in 1986. He went on to earn degrees at NMSU (biology) and UNM (doctor of medicine). He did his internship at Medical College of Virginia and his residency at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. He was an associate professor at Texas A&M Medical School before joining Pinon Family Practice in 2000.
Dr. Bliss is married to Dr. Lynne Bliss, a radiologist at San Juan Regional Center. Together they have four beautiful and multi-talented children – Emily, John, Allison, and Eli. Family gatherings and outings are their favorite way to spend free time. Among their interests are mountain biking, skiing, and boating. Well, all except Eli who is still in a baby carrier. But, look for him on the slopes before long.
Sean Faherty, MD
Dr. Faherty got his start in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He arrived on the scene in 1968. He graduated from Albuquerque Academy in 1986, and went on to earn an undergraduate degree in religion from Duke University in 1990. He was soon accepted in UNM School of Medicine where he graduated in 1995. He did his internship and residency at UNM School of Medicine.
Dr. Faherty has been with Pinon Family Practice since April of 2000 and has always made it a point to stay ahead of the curve regardless of the specialty or environment. He is currently working on a project that will launch PFP well into the 21st Century by creating an
authentic healthcare partnership between doctors and patients.
Dr. Faherty is a serious bicycling enthusiast, who, when he is not burning 5,000 calories on wheels, can be found simmering, dancing, macerating, or searing gourmet concoctions in his extensively stocked kitchen. His wife Denise, a licensed dietician, is an equally passionate “foodie.” Some of their most pleasant evenings are spent in the kitchen where daughters Megan and Montana are enthusiastically engaged in slicing, dicing, and stirring food for the evening’s meal. Bon appetit!
R. Stephen Rankin, MD
Dr. Rankin, father of five and grandfather of four, hails from Rockville, IN. He earned a degree in zoology from DePauw University in 1972. His passion for living things in general, and medicine in particular, was carried a step further as he pursued a Physician Assistant degree at Indiana University. He did not stop there, however. He eventually earned his MD at University of New Mexico where he graduated in 1993. He did his internship at UNM and his residency at UNM. His specialty is pediatrics. In addition to caring compassionately for children with complicated and difficult diseases, his overarching commitment is to create a population of young people who care naturally about their health and who want to learn to make the best choices for themselves as they grow up. So far, this is working well in his own family—his son, Michael, is a practicing pediatrician in Farmington as well
Julie Schaefer, MS, PA-C
Julie Schaefer, a physician assistant, has been with Pinon Family Practice since 1999. Julie graduated from Arcadia University with a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies. She has provided family and well woman healthcare for over eleven years. Due to a strong community need for more specialized diabetes care, she attained certification as a diabetes educator and insulin pump trainer in 2007.
